[Enter a Doctor of Physic and a Waiting-Gentlewoman.]

[의사와 시중드는 귀부인 등장.]

DOCTOR. I have two nights watched with you, but can perceive no truth in your report. When was it she last walked?

의사. 이틀 밤을 당신과 함께 지켜보았지만, 당신이 한 말이 사실이라는 것을 전혀 알 수 없군요. 왕비께서 마지막으로 걸어 다니신 게 언제였소?

GENTLEWOMAN. Since his majesty went into the field, I have seen her rise from her bed, throw her nightgown upon her, unlock her closet, take forth paper, fold it, write upon it, read it, afterwards seal it, and again return to bed; yet all this while in a most fast sleep.

귀부인. 전하께서 전장으로 나가신 뒤로, 저는 왕비께서 침대에서 일어나 잠옷을 걸치시고, 벽장 문을 여시고, 종이를 꺼내 접으시고, 거기에 글을 쓰시고, 읽으시고, 그다음 봉하신 뒤에 다시 침대로 돌아가시는 것을 보았습니다. 그런데 그동안 내내 아주 깊이 잠들어 계셨습니다.

DOCTOR. A great perturbation in nature,--to receive at once the benefit of sleep, and do the effects of watching-- In this slumbery agitation, besides her walking and other actual performances, what, at any time, have you heard her say?

의사. 본성이 크게 어지러워진 것이오. 잠의 혜택을 받으면서 동시에 깨어 있는 사람처럼 움직이다니. 이렇게 잠든 채 불안하게 돌아다니실 때, 걷거나 다른 행동을 하시는 것 말고, 무슨 말씀을 하시는 것을 들은 적이 있소?

GENTLEWOMAN. That, sir, which I will not report after her.

귀부인. 그것은, 선생님, 제가 그대로 옮기지 않으렵니다.

DOCTOR. You may to me; and 'tis most meet you should.

의사. 내게는 말해도 되오. 그리고 그러는 것이 마땅하오.

GENTLEWOMAN. Neither to you nor any one; having no witness to confirm my speech. Lo you, here she comes!

귀부인. 선생님께도 다른 누구에게도 말하지 않겠습니다. 제 말을 뒷받침해 줄 증인이 없으니까요. 보세요, 저기 오십니다!

[Enter Lady Macbeth, with a taper.]

[맥베스 부인이 촛불을 들고 등장.]

This is her very guise; and, upon my life, fast asleep. Observe her; stand close.

늘 저런 모습이세요. 그리고 제 목숨을 걸고 말씀드리지만, 깊이 잠들어 계세요. 지켜보세요. 가까이 숨어 계세요.

DOCTOR. How came she by that light?

의사. 저 촛불은 어디서 났소?

GENTLEWOMAN. Why, it stood by her: she has light by her continually; 'tis her command.

귀부인. 그야, 곁에 놓여 있었지요. 왕비께서는 늘 곁에 불을 두세요. 그렇게 하라고 명하셨어요.

DOCTOR. You see, her eyes are open.

의사. 보시오, 눈을 뜨고 계시군.

GENTLEWOMAN. Ay, but their sense is shut.

귀부인. 네, 하지만 보는 감각은 닫혀 있어요.

DOCTOR. What is it she does now? Look how she rubs her hands.

의사. 지금 무엇을 하시는 거요? 저렇게 손을 비비시는 걸 보시오.

GENTLEWOMAN. It is an accustomed action with her, to seem thus washing her hands: I have known her continue in this a quarter of an hour.

귀부인. 늘 하시는 행동이에요. 이렇게 손을 씻는 것처럼 하시는 거지요. 십오 분 동안이나 계속하시는 것도 보았어요.

LADY MACBETH. Yet here's a spot.

맥베스 부인. 아직도 여기 얼룩이 있어.

DOCTOR. Hark, she speaks: I will set down what comes from her, to satisfy my remembrance the more strongly.

의사. 들어 보시오, 말씀을 하시는군. 기억을 더 확실히 해 두려고 나오는 말씀을 적어 두겠소.

LADY MACBETH. Out, damned spot! out, I say!-- One; two; why, then 'tis time to do't ;--Hell is murky!--Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?--Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?

맥베스 부인. 지워져라, 저주받은 얼룩아! 지워져라, 어서! 하나, 둘. 자, 그럼 해치울 시간이야. 지옥은 캄캄해! 에이, 여보, 에이! 군인이면서 겁이 나요? 누가 알면 어때요, 아무도 우리 권력에 책임을 물을 수 없는데? 그런데 그 늙은이 몸에 그렇게 많은 피가 있을 줄 누가 알았겠어?

DOCTOR. Do you mark that?

의사. 저 말 들었소?

LADY MACBETH. The Thane of Fife had a wife; where is she now?--What, will these hands ne'er be clean? No more o' that, my lord, no more o' that: you mar all with this starting.

맥베스 부인. 파이프 영주에게는 아내가 있었지. 그 여자는 지금 어디 있지? 뭐야, 이 손은 영영 깨끗해지지 않는 거야? 그만해요, 여보, 그만해요. 그렇게 깜짝깜짝 놀라면 다 망쳐요.

DOCTOR. Go to, go to; you have known what you should not.

의사. 저런, 저런. 알아서는 안 될 것을 알아 버리셨군.

GENTLEWOMAN. She has spoke what she should not, I am sure of that: heaven knows what she has known.

귀부인. 왕비께서는 말해서는 안 될 것을 말씀하셨어요, 그건 틀림없어요. 무엇을 아시는지는 하늘만 알겠지요.

LADY MACBETH. Here's the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh!

맥베스 부인. 여기 아직도 피 냄새가 나. 아라비아의 향수를 다 써도 이 작은 손을 향기롭게 하지 못하겠지. 오, 오, 오!

DOCTOR. What a sigh is there! The heart is sorely charged.

의사. 얼마나 깊은 한숨인가! 가슴이 몹시 무겁게 짓눌려 있구나.

GENTLEWOMAN. I would not have such a heart in my bosom for the dignity of the whole body.

귀부인. 저는 온몸의 존귀함을 다 준다 해도 저런 가슴을 제 안에 품고 싶지 않아요.

DOCTOR. Well, well, well,--

의사. 그래, 그래, 그래—

GENTLEWOMAN. Pray God it be, sir.

귀부인. 부디 다 괜찮기를 하느님께 빕니다, 선생님.

DOCTOR. This disease is beyond my practice: yet I have known those which have walked in their sleep who have died holily in their beds.

의사. 이 병은 내 의술로는 어찌할 수 없소. 하지만 잠든 채 걸어 다니던 사람들 가운데에도 침대에서 거룩하게 세상을 떠난 이들을 나는 알고 있소.

LADY MACBETH. Wash your hands, put on your nightgown; look not so pale:--I tell you yet again, Banquo's buried; he cannot come out on's grave.

맥베스 부인. 손을 씻고, 잠옷을 입으세요. 그렇게 창백한 얼굴 하지 말아요. 다시 말하지만, 뱅쿼는 묻혔어요. 무덤에서 나올 수 없어요.

DOCTOR. Even so?

의사. 그런 일까지?

LADY MACBETH. To bed, to bed; there's knocking at the gate: come, come, come, come, give me your hand: what's done cannot be undone: to bed, to bed, to bed.

맥베스 부인. 자러 가요, 자러 가요. 문을 두드리는 소리가 나요. 자, 자, 자, 자, 손을 이리 주세요. 한 일은 되돌릴 수 없어요. 자러 가요, 자러 가요, 자러 가요.

[Exit.]

[퇴장.]

DOCTOR. Will she go now to bed?

의사. 이제 침대로 가시려나?

GENTLEWOMAN. Directly.

귀부인. 곧장 가세요.

DOCTOR. Foul whisperings are abroad: unnatural deeds Do breed unnatural troubles: infected minds To their deaf pillows will discharge their secrets. More needs she the divine than the physician.-- God, God, forgive us all!--Look after her; Remove from her the means of all annoyance, And still keep eyes upon her:--so, good-night: My mind she has mated, and amaz'd my sight: I think, but dare not speak.

의사. 흉한 소문이 나돌고 있소. 자연을 거스르는 일은 자연을 거스르는 괴로움을 낳는 법. 병든 마음은 듣지 못하는 베개에다 비밀을 털어놓지. 왕비께는 의사보다 사제가 더 필요하오. 하느님, 하느님, 저희 모두를 용서하소서! 왕비를 잘 보살피시오. 스스로를 해칠 만한 물건은 모두 치우고, 늘 눈을 떼지 마시오. 그럼, 잘 자시오. 왕비 때문에 내 마음은 꼼짝 못 하고, 내 눈은 놀라 버렸소. 생각은 있으나 감히 말하지 못하겠소.

GENTLEWOMAN. Good-night, good doctor.

귀부인. 안녕히 주무세요, 선생님.
