[Enter Macbeth, Doctor, and Attendants.]

[맥베스, 의사, 시종들 등장.]

MACBETH. Bring me no more reports; let them fly all: Till Birnam wood remove to Dunsinane I cannot taint with fear. What's the boy Malcolm? Was he not born of woman? The spirits that know All mortal consequences have pronounc'd me thus,-- "Fear not, Macbeth; no man that's born of woman Shall e'er have power upon thee."--Then fly, false thanes, And mingle with the English epicures: The mind I sway by, and the heart I bear, Shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear.

맥베스. 더는 보고를 가져오지 마라. 다들 달아나라지. 버넘 숲이 던시네인으로 옮겨 오기 전까지는 나는 두려움에 물들지 않는다. 맬컴 그 애송이가 뭐냐? 그놈도 여자에게서 태어나지 않았느냐? 인간의 모든 앞날을 아는 영들이 내게 이렇게 말했다. "두려워 마라, 맥베스. 여자에게서 태어난 자는 아무도 너를 이길 힘을 갖지 못하리라." 그러니 달아나라, 거짓된 영주들아, 가서 잉글랜드의 식도락가들과 어울려라. 내가 따르는 마음과 내가 지닌 심장은 결코 의심으로 처지거나 두려움으로 떨지 않으리라.

[하인 등장.]

The devil damn thee black, thou cream-fac'd loon! Where gott'st thou that goose look?

악마가 너를 시커멓게 저주하기를, 이 우유처럼 허연 얼굴의 멍청이야! 어디서 그런 거위 같은 얼굴을 하고 왔느냐?

SERVANT. There is ten thousand--

하인. 일만이—

MACBETH. Geese, villain?

맥베스. 거위가 말이냐, 이 악당아?

SERVANT. Soldiers, sir.

하인. 병사들입니다, 전하.

MACBETH. Go prick thy face and over-red thy fear, Thou lily-liver'd boy. What soldiers, patch? Death of thy soul! those linen cheeks of thine Are counsellors to fear. What soldiers, whey-face?

맥베스. 가서 얼굴을 찔러 피로 그 두려움을 붉게 덧칠해라, 이 간덩이가 백합처럼 하얀 녀석아. 무슨 병사들이냐, 이 바보야? 네 영혼이 죽어 버려라! 그 리넨처럼 하얀 뺨은 남에게 두려움을 부추긴다. 무슨 병사들이냐, 이 유청 같은 얼굴아?

SERVANT. The English force, so please you.

하인. 송구하오나, 잉글랜드 군대입니다.

MACBETH. Take thy face hence.

맥베스. 그 얼굴을 치워라.

[Exit Servant.]

[하인 퇴장.]

Seyton!--I am sick at heart, When I behold--Seyton, I say!- This push Will chair me ever or disseat me now. I have liv'd long enough: my way of life Is fall'n into the sear, the yellow leaf; And that which should accompany old age, As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends, I must not look to have; but, in their stead, Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath, Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not. Seyton!--

시턴! 가슴이 아프구나, 내가 볼 때면— 시턴, 어서 오너라! 이번 공격이 나를 영원히 왕좌에 앉히든지, 아니면 지금 끌어내리든지 하겠지. 나는 살 만큼 살았다. 내 삶의 길은 시든 잎, 누렇게 바랜 잎이 되어 떨어졌다. 그리고 노년에 따라야 할 것들, 명예, 사랑, 순종, 무리 지은 벗들은 내가 바랄 수 없구나. 그 대신 크지는 않으나 깊은 저주, 입에 발린 존경, 빈말뿐이니, 가엾은 마음은 그것을 거절하고 싶어도 감히 그러지 못한다. 시턴!

[Enter Seyton.]

[시턴 등장.]

SEYTON. What's your gracious pleasure?

시턴. 무엇을 분부하시겠습니까?

MACBETH. What news more?

맥베스. 새로운 소식이 더 있느냐?

SEYTON. All is confirm'd, my lord, which was reported.

시턴. 전하, 보고된 것이 모두 사실로 확인되었습니다.

MACBETH. I'll fight till from my bones my flesh be hack'd. Give me my armour.

맥베스. 내 뼈에서 살이 다 베어져 나갈 때까지 싸우겠다. 내 갑옷을 다오.

SEYTON. 'Tis not needed yet.

시턴. 아직은 필요 없습니다.

MACBETH. I'll put it on. Send out more horses, skirr the country round; Hang those that talk of fear.--Give me mine armour.-- How does your patient, doctor?

맥베스. 입겠다. 말을 더 내보내 온 나라를 샅샅이 돌게 하라. 두려움을 입에 올리는 자는 목을 매달아라. 내 갑옷을 다오. 의사, 그대의 환자는 어떠한가?

DOCTOR. Not so sick, my lord, As she is troubled with thick-coming fancies, That keep her from her rest.

의사. 전하, 병이 깊으시다기보다는 자꾸 몰려오는 환상에 시달리셔서 쉬지를 못하십니다.

MACBETH. Cure her of that: Canst thou not minister to a mind diseas'd; Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow; Raze out the written troubles of the brain; And with some sweet oblivious antidote Cleanse the stuff'd bosom of that perilous stuff Which weighs upon the heart?

맥베스. 그걸 고쳐 주게. 그대는 병든 마음을 치료할 수 없는가? 기억에서 뿌리박힌 슬픔을 뽑아내고, 머릿속에 적힌 괴로움을 지워 내고, 어떤 달콤한 망각의 해독제로 가슴을 짓누르는 그 위험한 것을 가득 막힌 가슴에서 씻어 낼 수 없는가?

DOCTOR. Therein the patient Must minister to himself.

의사. 그런 일은 환자가 스스로를 치료해야 합니다.

MACBETH. Throw physic to the dogs,--I'll none of it.-- Come, put mine armour on; give me my staff:-- Seyton, send out.--Doctor, the Thanes fly from me.-- Come, sir, despatch.--If thou couldst, doctor, cast The water of my land, find her disease, And purge it to a sound and pristine health, I would applaud thee to the very echo, That should applaud again.--Pull't off, I say.-- What rhubarb, senna, or what purgative drug, Would scour these English hence? Hear'st thou of them?

맥베스. 의술 따위는 개에게나 던져 줘라. 나는 필요 없다. 자, 갑옷을 입혀라. 내 지휘봉을 다오. 시턴, 사람을 내보내라. 의사, 영주들이 나를 버리고 달아나는구나. 자, 서둘러라. 의사, 그대가 할 수 있다면 내 나라의 소변을 살펴 그 병을 찾아내고, 깨끗이 씻어 내 처음의 건강한 상태로 돌려놓아라. 그러면 내가 메아리가 울릴 만큼 박수를 쳐 주겠다, 그 메아리가 다시 박수를 칠 만큼. 그건 벗겨라, 어서. 어떤 대황이나 센나 잎이나 어떤 설사약이 이 잉글랜드 놈들을 여기서 쓸어 내 줄까? 그들 소식을 들었느냐?

DOCTOR. Ay, my good lord; your royal preparation Makes us hear something.

의사. 네, 전하. 전하께서 왕답게 채비하시는 것을 보니 저희도 무언가 듣게 됩니다.

MACBETH. Bring it after me.-- I will not be afraid of death and bane, Till Birnam forest come to Dunsinane.

맥베스. 그걸 뒤따라 가져오너라. 나는 죽음도 파멸도 두려워하지 않으리라, 버넘 숲이 던시네인으로 오기 전까지는.

[Exeunt all except Doctor.]

[의사만 남고 모두 퇴장.]

DOCTOR. Were I from Dunsinane away and clear, Profit again should hardly draw me here.

의사. 내가 던시네인에서 멀리 무사히 벗어난다면, 아무리 큰 이득을 준대도 다시 여기 오지는 않으리라.
